The 24 Solar Terms: China’s Poetic Markings Carved into Time

Introduction

The 24 solar terms are a love letter written by agrarian civilization to time — and the crystallized wisdom of ancient Chinese ancestors who looked up at the stars and down at the earth.

What Are the Solar Terms

The 24 solar terms originated in the Yellow River basin’s tradition of observing celestial phenomena to set the calendar, and were fully established by the Western Han dynasty’s Huainanzi. Based on the earth’s position as it orbits the sun, the year is divided into twenty-four segments of about fifteen days each, tracking the alternation of cold and heat and the succession of seasonal changes.

The 72 Pentads

Each solar term is further divided into three pentads, with one pentad every five days, totaling seventy-two. Sayings like “east wind thaws the frozen earth, hibernating insects begin to stir, fish rise through the breaking ice” record the subtle rhythms of heaven and earth through the transformations of plants, insects, and birds.

A Cultural Landmark

In 2016, the 24 solar terms were inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. They are far more than an agricultural calendar — they have crystallized into a shared body of foodways, festivals, poetry, and life philosophy.
